Notation conventions used in Dan's documents
Keyboard commands
- When I provide keyboard command instructions that combine a modifier key (such as the Ctrl or Shift key) with other keys, I will write them as follows, with the Windows modifier key ( Ctrl ) first followed by the Mac equivalent ( ⌘ ):
- Ctrl/⌘-K
- The above means that when using Windows you would use Ctrl-k and on a Mac you would use ⌘-k
- Also note that I used a lower-case "k" in the bullet point directly above and yet in the command example I use an uppercase K.
- I use the uppercase letters because they are more legible.
- It does not mean to use the Shift key in addition to the letter k.
- The ⌘ key is what appears on the Mac's Command key and means the same thing.
- I neglect to use the Mac equivalent to the Ctrl key. Therefore, assume that Ctrl is replaced by the Mac ⌘ Command key.
Menu commands
- For menu commands where there is a series of sub-menu selections that I want you to make, I usually provide the series of selections that need to be made separated by a > symbol.
- For example, this starts by opening the Insert menu in Dreamweaver:
Insert > HTML > Character > Euro
- The above means
- open the Insert menu
- from that menu select
HTML
- from the sub-menu that appears select
Character
- and from the next sub-menu select
Euro
